Home automation usually means tinkering with incompatible gadgets and webcams just so you can see when FedEx arrives at your front door. The Hawking HomeRemote Wireless Home Automation System is an all-in-one solution that attaches to your current router, serving up a free Web page from which you can control and monitor everything from lighting and garage-door openers to video surveillance. (Behind the scenes, the solution integrates Ethernet, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi technologies.) But the real perk is that you can control these devices from your laptop, any smart phone, or any Java-enabled cell phone. Hawking is also working on an iPhone client and a Brew-enabled version for Verizon Wireless phones.
