Nothing beats the ability to communicate in real time with people all over the world without spending a cent. Too bad your instant messaging client limits your chats to members of that service only. Yahoo and Microsoft recently launched a public test allowing interoperability between Yahoo Instant Messenger and Windows Live Messenger, but users of other services like AOL and Google Talk are left out in the cold. Trillian (www.ceruleanstudios.com) eases the load of multiple IMs by allowing users to communicate with virtually every IM service from one program.
Trillian Basic 3 is a free download that enables communication with AIM, ICQ, IRC, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Instant Messenger. Trillian Pro 3, a $25 purchase, allows communication with Google Talk and Skype, and features video chat. Trillian offers a bevy of other features: a color-coded system that allows you to quickly identify which IM service that a chatter is using, chat histories, new mail notifications, and downloadable skins to change the look of the interface.
