It makes shock-resistant hard drives seem like a carton of eggs. Found in notebooks like the Dell Latitude ATG D630, SanDisk's Solid State Drive SATA 5000 2.5-inch employs flash-memory chips instead of the spinning platters and head mechanism of a traditional magnetic hard drive. The result: vastly improved reliability (since there are no moving parts), lightning-quick access times (0.1 ms versus 14 ms for a 7,200-rpm hard drive), and longer battery life.

As capacities push beyond the current 64GB and prices drop, look for more notebook makers to jump on the SSD bandwagon.
