Tablet PCs are perfect for students who need to take digital notes, field workers who fill out digital forms on the go, and creative professionals who want to make detailed sketches. A convertible design adds the convenience of a full-sized keyboard. But with so many features (touch-sensitive technology, stylus input digitizer, and shock-resistant drives, to name a few), it can be tough to settle on a convertible that's right for you. Here we offer three handy buying tips and three killer convertibles, so you're fully informed before you make your purchase.

1. True Digitizer
Some convertibles settle for a touch-sensitive screen, which is fine for simple button pressing and some ink input. But systems with a real digitizer recognize hover moves or gestures from a stylus and can register pen-pressure sensitivity in some applications.

2. Smart Ergonomics
In Tablet mode, it's all about comfort and accessibility. Look for good contouring and something to grip when the converted unit is in the crook of your arm. Viewing angles, CPU heat, and display brightness during outdoor use are all critical considerations.

3. Klutz-friendly Design
Tablets don't sit in cases. They get held in one arm and are occasionally dropped, so look for shock-resistant drives. If you plan to use the convertible outdoors, look for one that's resistant to dust and moisture. And make sure the latches will hold the LCD down on the keyboard securely for the long haul.
