Raketu is joining others like Jajah in offering Web-based voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) calling. The peer-to-peer VoIP company last week announced RakWeb, a Web-based VoIP telephony service. Entirely browser-based, the service doesn't require consumers to download any software. Users have to go to Raketu.com, enter their own phone number (landline or mobile), then enter the destination number, and Raketu connects the lines for less than the cost of traditional calls.
While the RakWeb service can be used on a computer-based Web browser, it can also be used on any mobile browser. You can log into your account similarly as you would with Talkster: On the mobile Raketu Web site, you input your cell number and the number you're calling. Raketu will call your cell and then initiate a call to the number you're trying to call. To use the RakWeb service you need to purchase RakOut credit, money paid up front that allows users on Raketu to call a landline/mobile phone with the purchased credit. RakOut offers calling to locations in more than 40 countries around the world and has the lowest published rates.
The company will also launch a new mobile Web site (www.raketu.mobi) later this week for easier mobile browsing and easy access to RakWeb from your phone. The Raketu Web service joins the Raketu desktop application software that lets users make free Raketu-to-Raketu calling on PCs. The RakWeb feature is available at Raketu's Web site.
