Today, Intel announced the Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N network connection, an upgrade based on the 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, which offers notebooks five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11a/g signals, while providing increased battery life over existing Draft-N products.
With three antennas to boost reception, Intel's new 802.11n chips, which will come integrated into notebooks with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, improve home networking by reducing dead spots and optimizing high-definition content, such as a streaming HD movie, for increased battery life (Intel states that users can expect up to an hour of extra juice). The technology will also feature legacy compatibility with 802.11a/b/g.
Intel also announced it has launched a "Connect with Centrino" program, an initiative partnership with Asus, Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link, and Netgear to better ensure Wireless-N compatibility and performance. The "Connect with Centrino" identifier will be offered in conjunction with new Intel Centrino Duo notebooks from manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Gateway, and Toshiba. Conspicuously absent were the names Dell, HP, and Linksys; Intel states that those companies are currently evaluating the technology.
