Users that invest in a GPS-enabled PDA often discover that in order to get a good satellite signal, the handheld must be mounted far down the windshield, where it's difficult to read. A better solution: Place Dell's new Bluetooth-powered GPS receiver under the windshield and then position your Axim X30 anywhere you like. No more will you have to battle satellite visibility just to read the display.

The Dell GPS Navigation System includes the receiver itself-a small, cell-phone-sized gadget with an integrated 8-hour battery, a suction-mounted PDA stand for your windshield, a car power adapter, and software. Setup is easy; you can install maps by selecting an entire state at once or by defining a coverage radius from the city of your choice. You can install the maps to your Pocket PC's internal memory, but it's far better to place the files on the X30's SD Card. It makes a difference whether you're looking at Delaware or Texas, of course, but expect to dedicate 20 to 50MB of memory for most states (and 100MB for a behemoth like California).

The navigation software is superb. You can set your destination by address, intersection, point of interest, or city center, and you can work from your address book or a list of previously stored favorite locations. Dell provides day and night color schemes, overhead and isometric bird's-eye views, and delivers clear advice about upcoming turns as you follow a route.

While you can use the car power adapter to run or charge your GPS antenna, we were pleased that you can also charge the receiver directly off the back of the X30's ActiveSync cradle. It navigated without a hitch to a variety of destinations. Just one minor complaint: The car mount for the Axim was a bit unstable, readily transferring every bump in the road to the Pocket PC's display.

Costing almost $250, the Dell GPS Navigation System is not inexpensive. But if you need in-car navigation and already have an Axim X30, it is well worth the price.
